Beetroot is not only rich in folate which is beneficial for both women and men trying to conceive, but also nitrates that your body naturally converts into nitric oxide. This causes your blood vessels to dilate, improving the flow of oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood to your reproductive organs.
It’s so simple to make, all you need to do is throw all the ingredients into a blender and whiz it up.
1 large refrigerated whole cooked beetroot
2 tablespoons of plain full-fat yoghurt
Half a cup unsweetened almond milk
Half a teaspoon of ground ginger
WHY IS IT GOOD FOR YOUR FERTILE HEALTH?
Beetroot: Rich in folate which in men helps to improve sperm count and quality, and in women helps to prevent birth defects. It also contains nitrates that are converted naturally in the body to nitric oxide, which helps to improve blood flow and lower blood pressure
Yoghurt: Fermented food rich in ‘good’ bacteria that fortifies the gut microbiome and helps to support the immune system
Almonds: Rich in Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) of which deficiencies have been linked to sterility, miscarriage and low birth weight. Almond milk (e.g. Alpro) also tends to be fortified with additional vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for fertility
Ginger: Helps to regulate blood sugar levels, increase blood circulation and has anti-inflammatory properties
Banana: Natural sweetener and good source of fibre, which helps to get rid of excess oestrogen in the body
